Deployment Benefits

  • Dynamic teaching experiences in the evolving education system.

Limited Vacancies to Address Teacher Shortfall

This initiative seeks to fill 6,000 deployment vacancies, addressing the significant teacher shortage in junior secondary schools. TSC is currently facing a deficit of 72,422 teachers in this category. This gap was exacerbated by the transition of Grade 9 students, the pioneer cohort of the competency-based curriculum (CBC), in January 2023.

Required

Earlier this year, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia shared that the commission has 76,928 teachers serving in junior secondary schools, accounting for only 51.5% of the required workforce. This includes:

  • 9,000 teachers hired on permanent terms.
  • 8,378 P1 teachers deployed over the last two years.
  • 39,550 teachers initially recruited as interns and later absorbed permanently.

To fully address the shortage, TSC needs a total of 149,350 teachers to cater to Grade 7, 8, and 9 learners.

Government’s Role in Bridging the Gap

As part of a broader strategy to tackle the teacher deficit, the government has allocated Sh4.8 billion to recruit and deploy 20,000 intern teachers for JSS starting this January. These teachers will undergo specialized retooling sessions to prepare them for their roles.

Between May 2023 and November 2024, TSC reported that 60,642 teachers were trained specifically for JSS subjects.

A TSC official highlighted the government’s commitment, stating that this phased recruitment and training program is essential to guarantee a smooth learning experience and prevent further disruptions caused by teacher shortages.
